Sports Physicals for Student Athletes: Why are they Important?

Picture of high school basketball playersAccording to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, athletic injuries account for about 20 percent of all injury-related emergency visits for kids ages six to 19. Sports physicals can uncover hidden dangers prior to the start of the season, which helps keep athletes safe on and off the field. They are typically required about one month prior to the start the season to address medical conditions and modify training plans.

As an ART® Provider and ACE® Certified Personal Trainer, Nathaniel Wiechmann, D.C., specializes in treating and assessing student athletes. During a sports physical, Dr. Wiechmann will check for the following:

  • Muscle imbalance
  • Joint pain or tenderness
  • Curvature of the spine
  • Problems with reflexes

The sports physical will also include a health history check to identify any previous injuries or conditions that may need to be addressed prior to the start of the season. In most cases, the athlete will be cleared to participate in sports appropriate for his or her age group. If something needs to be addressed, Dr. Wiechmann may be able to treat the condition on the spot, or he may choose to refer the child to another specialist for further evaluation and treatment.
